Business Leader's Awards 2012

Business leaders are uniquely placed to combat exploitative labour practices and to raise awareness of human trafficking among their workforces, suppliers, business partners, peers and even consumers. UN.GIFT, the End Human Trafficking Now Campaign ( EHTN) and the UN Global Compact established the Business Leaders Award to Fight Human Trafficking to recognize those men and women taking an active stand against modern-day slavery in the private sector.

Now in its second cycle, the Business Leaders Award is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on what businesses are doing against human trafficking. The first-ever award was jointly bestowed Forum in December 2010, to Christopher Davis (Body Shop International), Marilyn Carlson Nelson (Carlson Companies) and Robert Rigby-Hall (LexisNexis, Inc.).

The Business Leader's Award acknowledges the vision, creativity and contribution of businesses leaders in identifying, combating and preventing trafficking in persons. Nominations are now being accepted. Further information on the award and the nomination form can be found at www.businessleaderaward.org. All nominations should be submitted by 31 January 2012.

HOST AN EVENT ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Helping victims of human trafficking is as simple as talking to a friend. Host an event and invite the community to discuss the exploitation of human beings. At this campaign, we are eager to spread the word and we would like to talk at any community event about human trafficking and victim identification.

These are some of the things you can do to help fight human trafficking:

Be informed! Educate yourself about human trafficking by reading about it. Follow events in the news. Keep your eyes open - human trafficking is happening all around us.

Raise awareness! Talk to friends, family, and colleagues. You could even start talking to your local politicians and authorities.

Get involved! Participate in an anti-trafficking movement in your area and get involved in its activities and campaigns (e.g., hold events, distribute posters, leaflets etc.) in your neighborhood and in schools.

Encourage businesses! Be a responsible consumer! Inform yourself on the labor policies of companies to ensure their products are free from slave labor and other forms of exploitation. If possible, buy fair trade products.

Seek support! If you suspect that someone has been trafficked report it to the institutions or assistance facilities dealing with human trafficking in your area.
